When Rev and I are enjoying moments of marital bliss, I don’t want to change a thing. But when, on those rare occasions, our conversations have been strained and we’ve had trouble connecting … we needed help.

Whether it has been our job challenges, kid problems, the stresses or busyness of life … whatever was going on, we’ve needed God in our lives.

A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer. Three are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken.  —Ecclesiastes 4:12

We have always needed the “triple-braided cord” that is not easily broken.

We need the Lord in our marriage.

So, there have been countless times when we’ve prayed together over situations beyond our understanding and many more times we’ve prayed about the everyday things wearing us down.

We’ve asked God for wisdom and direction, peace and protection, healing and help.

In recent years, we have started praying Scripture and I’d love to share those verses and prayers with you here…

5 Verses and Prayers that will Bless Your Marriage

1. Three are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken.       —Ecclesiastes 4:12

Father, we know that even when we stand together the enemy will try to discourage us and pull us apart. We need You! We need You to stand with us and give us strength.

When our marriage began we promised to love each other “for better or worse.” We didn’t know what that would mean. We had no clue how hard some of our worst moments would be. But You knew. Nothing is a surprise to You. You have been with us in the past and we trust that you will be with us in the future.

So, whatever we face, stand with us and help us stand strong together. Protect our marriage Lord as You keep us united by Your grace and with Your help.

2. Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.  —Ephesians 5:21

Father, forgive us. We can get so caught up with the word “submit” we fail to honor Your will for our marriage.

We can be selfish wanting our own way. It’s hard to yield to someone else. Honestly, we struggle to surrender ourselves completely to You. But humble surrender even though it goes against our selfish nature, blesses us. Your will is always best.

Help us, Father. On our own, we can’t but with Your help, we can love better. With Your help, we can submit to each other even when it’s hard. By Your grace and with Your help we surrender ourselves to You and to each other. Amen.

3. Always be humble and gentle. Be patient with each other, making allowance for each other’s faults because of your love. Make every effort to keep yourselves united in the Spirit, binding yourselves together with peace.  —Ephesians 4:2–3

Oh, Father, humble, gentle, and patient.

We want that … well, we want to receive it but it’s not always easy to give it. But life is messy … it’s just hard. Problems overwhelm and people interfere. Please help us.

Unite us to each other by the power of Your Spirit. Help us see the best ways to work together united by the love You have given us. Make us humble, gentle, and patient … understanding of each other’s weaknesses.

And Father, make us aware and thankful for the gentleness and patience we receive. Please unite us by Your presence and give our home the peace of Your presence.

4. Be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you. —Ephesians 4:32

Father, help us to be kind to one another.

Kindness is defined as being generous, sympathetic, compassionate, and tender. Empower us to be generous with kind words and acts of love. Strengthen us to be compassionate and forgiving … even when it’s not easy.

You have been so kind and generous to us. You have forgiven us again and again. You give us everything we need in and through Jesus. Your mercy and grace overwhelm us. Your love surrounds us.

We believe in and with You, our marriage can be full of kindness. With Your help, we can be thoughtful and generous. With Your help, we can forgive as You forgive. With Your help, we can love like Jesus.

5. Most important of all, continue to show deep love for each other, for love covers a multitude of sins.  —1 Peter 4:8

Father, We need an outpouring of Your love … love that covers our flaws and failures. Love that pours into us and through us to each other.

And please, give us a deep love for each other. Help us to remember and honor the promise we made years ago. May we celebrate the good days and hold each other close on the hard ones. Help us to speak and act in ways that nurture trust and when we fail … help us to forgive quickly. May we grow in faith, in wisdom, in maturity, and even more in love. By Your grace, with Your Spirit’s help, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

If there’s one thing I know – God has blessed our marriage through prayer.

It’s funny when I think back through the various stages and seasons of our marriage, God was always there, through . . .

  • The first year of living together.
  • Moves, job changes, and ministry challenges.
  • Infertility.
  • Raising 3 children.
  • Rejection and loss.
  • Life-threatening illness.
  • More things than there is time or space here.

He has met every need and answered every prayer. Maybe not the way we wanted but I truly believe in the way that was best.

So my best marriage advice … PRAY! Together and individually give it all to God and trust Him to give you what you need.

Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and He will give you everything you need (Luke 12:31).
